Why teachers use a random student picker

Calling on students at random keeps everyone alert, because anyone might be picked next. It also takes away any feeling that the teacher has favourites. A spinning wheel on the board turns cold-calling into a quick, fun moment rather than a stressful one.

Paste your class list once and it is saved in your browser, so the wheel is ready next lesson. Use full-screen mode on a projector or interactive whiteboard so the whole room can see the spin.

Classroom ideas

Use the wheel to choose who answers a question, who reads aloud, the order of presentations, classroom helpers for the week, or who picks the reward activity. Remove each student after they are picked to make sure everyone gets a turn before anyone is picked twice.

You can also put questions, vocabulary words or review topics on the wheel instead of names for a quick game at the end of a lesson.

Student privacy

Your class list stays in your own browser and is never uploaded to our servers. If you prefer, use first names only or student numbers.

Frequently asked questions

Will my class list be saved for next time?

Yes. The list is saved in your browser on that device, so it is still there next lesson. If you use a different computer, use the Share link to bring the same list with you.

How do I make sure every student gets a turn?

After each spin, click "Remove winner". That student is taken off the wheel until you reload your list, so everyone is picked once before anyone is picked again.

Can I use it on an interactive whiteboard?

Yes. Open the page in the board's browser, press the full-screen button, and tap the wheel to spin.

Are my entries saved or shared with anyone?

Your entries are saved only in your own browser so they are still there next time. They are not uploaded to our servers. If you use the Share button, the entries are placed inside the link itself, so only people you send the link to can see them.

Is the result really random?

Yes. The winner is chosen with your browser's built-in cryptographic random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues) before the wheel starts turning. Every entry has exactly the same chance, and the spin animation simply shows that result.
